Speaker & paper updates

I am sorry to have to report a couple of drop-outs from the conference.


Our Chairman/MC/genial host Professor Nick Brett is having to cry off because of a major incident in his proper job as Deputy MD of BBC Magazines that means he will not be able to spare the time. As a result I may seek volunteers to chair individual sessions – strict timekeeping will be required.


Dr Darren Wershler, Concordia University Research Chair in Media and Contemporary Literature, will no longer be able to contribute his paper to the Round Table. This still leaves three on the table, however, so the session will still be full of good things.


It looked as though Mehita Iqani of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, might also have to drop out but a little lateral thinking means that although she will not be physically present, she will be contributing a narrated slideshow of the key points of her paper.

FORMAT FOR PAPERS

The pioneering paper submission has come from Amy Binns, who kindly agreed to set the format for us all to follow.

This is what she chose:

In order to make it as easy as possible to replicate, I have stuck to styles readily available on Word, so the margins are Word standard. The font is Georgia body 11 pt, double spaced except for long quotes which are single spaced, and references which are 1.15.The header is the Exposure choice, using my own name instead of the date, clicking the "different for first page" option to remove it from the title page.The page number is Bottom of page, Plain number 2.Title page is centred, Georgia, title (26 pt), subtitle (16pt italic), author (14pt), Mapping the Magazine 3, Cardiff University 2011, 16 pt. Subheadings are 16pt centered, secondary subheadings are 14 pt, left justified.

TIMINGS

I am still working on the actual schedules for the two days but I can say now that the likely start time for the first day is 9.30am and the likely finish time for the second day will be between 4 and 5pm depending on how well people stick to the 20 minute rule, how many questions arise and whether there are any technological glitches.

Housekeeping: Presentation and Papers

Presentations
We have a fair amount to pack in to our two days, so I am asking that presentations are kept to around 20 minutes. The presentation should be a summary of your paper rather than a verbatim reading of it. I will be scheduling the sessions based on this timing and any over-runs will cut into discussion time and/or coffee-and-comfort breaks.

Papers
I propose that everyone submits working papers – that is, the written material does not have to be in its final, polished, journal-ready form (although fully finished papers will, of course, be very welcome).

I further propose that these papers are included in an online Proceedings that will be hosted on Cardiff School of Journalism’s website. These will certainly be made available to all delegates but there is also the option to make them accessible to all comers. The latter would be my preference, with suitable caveats about the “working” condition of the material, and it could have the useful benefit of attracting further debate and feedback. I cannot imagine many trolls infiltrating these pages.

DEADLINE: The final deadline for working papers will be July 8 but anyone who has material ready before then is welcome to submit it beforehand.

Likewise, anyone who would like handouts, please get the material to me as far in advance as possible so I can photocopy it.

Papers should be in Word, with Harvard referencing. It would be nice to have a common style (font, size, titles, etc) and I will send around a model format in the near future. As these are working papers there is no word limit. Any illustrations must be copyright free or used under an appropriate Creative Commons licence.

If you are thinking of tweeting proceedings, great. Can I suggest that we adopt the hashtag #mtm3.

Housekeeping: Dinner
If my plans come to fruition , the conference dinner will be provided in the Cardiff School of Journalism by a local pop-up caterer. It will have a Welsh theme, produce will be locally sourced – and vegetarian. Carnivores are welcome to bring their own supplies of biltong or jerky. I am trying to get a sponsor for wine but again everyone is welcome to bring their own bottle(s).

Post-dinner entertainment will be provided by you and me – a small PA and guitars will be available for an open mic session, so brush up on those chord shapes.

It's never good to start with an apology but sincerest imaginable to the people whose papers got left out of the previous list of delegates to Mapping the Magazine 3.

Terry Parry, Head of Technical Sales and Development at UPM-Kymmene (UK) Ltd, will give a presentation on the potential of paper and print to enhance the magazine experience.


Nick Brett, deputy MD of BBC Magazines and Honorary Professor of Magazine Journalism at Cardiff University, will act as our genial host over the two days.


All in all that makes a total of 30 papers in two days, so we're going to be busy.

The abstracts have all been reviewed and proposers informed.

We will have 25 papers in two days at Mapping the Magazine 3, including the conference's first Round Table session and a Skype presentation.

Now I just have to work out a schedule ...

The deadline for submissions to Mapping the Magazine 3 is February 11 – so still time to submit your abstract.

Professor Samir "Mr Magazine" Husni, founder of the Magazine Innovation Centre, has sent over a great idea already, so if you'd like to join him and many other liked-minded magazinophiles in Cardiff, get that submission in.
